Discussion Director Chapters 3-4

CHAPTER 3

1. What is one of the reasons why Gatsby is so well known in New York?

2. Why was it awkward for Nick at the party and why were their rumors being spread about Gatsby?

3. Explain this quote "He had one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life."

CHAPTER 4
1. Why was Gatsby pulled over by a cop, and what did he show him? What happens then?

2. What did Gatsby confess to Jordan?

3. Why does Gatsby want Nick to invite Daisy to tea?

  1. 1.Gastby is a very known person around New York because of the elaborate parties he throws at his manision on West Egg every weeknend, that significant individuals wish to attend.
    2.Nick felt out of place during Gastby's luxerious party, because there were various rumors that were spreading around. Some rumors include that he was a Gernam spy during World War One and that he killed a man in cold blood. Even though Nick and others were invited to the party, they knew nothing about the mysterious Gastby.
    3.That quote shows that Gatsby's smile was a relection of his charm and charisma, and anyone he smiles at him feels that they were "chosen out of the whole external world" which brings self-assurance from within.

    1.As Gatsby was driving through the Valley of Ashes to get to the city, a policeman called him over for speeding. Gatsby shows the policeman a white card and the offical apologized for bothering him.
    2.Gatby confessed to Jordan Baker that he is still in love with Daisy. Daisy was a beautiful woman in kentucky and fell in love with Gatsby when he was stationed there. When Gatsby left for war, she married Tom, however, she cried.
    3.Gatby wants Nick to arrange tea with Daisy, becuase Gatsby is terrified that she won't want to see him. However, during tea time he will come and force her to see him

  2. 1.Just like Candida said, Gatsby is very well known for his grand & extravagant parties he throws where copious wealthy people come.
    2.Nick feels out of place because he doesn't know anybody who attended the party. Nick hears rumors about Gatsby because no one has actually met him in person.
    3.For this quote, Nick is describing Gatsby's persona and says that he has a demeanor that reflects his great optimism and hope for what the future may bring/ he knows what he wants.

    1.Gatsby was pulled over by a cop because he was speeding through the street at a very fast pace, but Gatsby doesn't worry; instead he just shows the officer a white card with his name on it and the cop lets him go without hesitating.
    2.Gatsby confessed to Jordan that he is in love with Daisy and ever since he was a lieutenant he has loved her.
    3.Gatsby wants Nick to invite Daisy to tea because he wants to see her loved one, but is frightened to ask her himself since he thinks she will not agree, so he wants Nick to help him see her.
