Discussion Questions Ch.8-9

  1. 1. Uncle John had a young wife and was married to her for four months, she thought there was something wrong with her stomach so she asks him to call for a doctor, but he didn't think anything of it and ignored it saying she ate too much and it's just a stomachache. Since he didn't call for a doctor her appendix blew up inside her and was killed at four that afternoon. He became more generous then he was before. I don't think he will because he still thinks it's his fault for his wife's death.

    2. Casy confessed that he wasn't a preacher anymore and that being glad, thanking people and being generous is enough for him.

    3. Even though the past remains past, it will come back and affect the future and present sooner or later.

    4. Once a baby is born, it is made of nothing but pure innocence. Once the baby begins to grow older and older, each year they have mistakes that they regret, done things they know they shouldn't have. If a person is trying to start over or start new, they can't because they have a past to deal with still, the past will stick with them throughout their lifetime and the only way a person could start over is if they were a baby again. This is how I feel about that quote.

  2. 1. Jessica said exactly what I would say. Uncle John was ignorant and did not believe her wife had a serious ache, so in consequence, she died. Uncle John will never forgive himself for not believing his own wife and will always carry his guilt for it.

2.Instead of giving a traditional prayer, Casey gives a pep-talk on how a man, itself, is holy enough. He prefers to talk about the reality than about some Bible story.

3.I am not really sure about this quote and I am confused about it, but it is truly a good quote.

    4. Wow! Jessica shared a really well said explanation on the quote. I totally agree with her. I am going to add that a baby starts life and does not do anything wrong yet, since it does not have the mentality to be harmful, so everything that may be wrong can be fixable. On the other hand, grown people have lived for a while and are aware of their actions which means it they do something bad, it is very difficult for the to try to erase it from their past.

  3. 1.I agree with Jessica and Whitney because Tom Joad did not realize that his wife had a serious health condition. When it was too late, he realized that her condition was a matter of lefe or death and she died. He tried to decrease his sense of pain, however, he still has that sense of guilt within him.
    2. During a meal, Former-Reverend Casy does not give a holy prayer because he felt that he was not holy enough. Instead he thanks everyone for their genorsity.

  4. 3.
The quote states that the past can be tried to be forgotten, however, it can come to haunt those in the future and effect the future.
4.What the means is that since a baby is innocent it can start his life anew. A grown person cannot commpletly start over because they made mistakes that will "tarnish" them for life
